Clay Jars

‘The God who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness’,

has shone in our hearts

to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God

in the face of Jesus Christ.

But we have this treasure in clay jars,

so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God

and does not come from us.’

Second letter of Paul to the Corinthians 2: 6-7

  • Take time to contemplate these jars: how do they feel? what is their texture like? what about their temperature when you touch them?
  • Take time to ponder Paul’s words in the Letter to the Corinthians. Consider the image of the light, then the image of the clay, and then the light being contained in the jars of clay.
  • Can I welcome God’s light in my heart today?
  • Aware that I am not the light, aware of my fragility, can I receive these lines as good news for me?
